Student site

While surfing the net amongst many other things that were going on around me, I realised there is no student site that has its soul purpose to list events, host forums and pictures of them awesome ENSOC events. At present there is a few individual sites that the university club owns and runs, some of them host a few pictures and maybe a JavaScript poll. Almost all of them are poorly run, using static HTML. Is there a need for a student run, student site that can be used for organising events? I think so. I set out to find a few off shore examples and came across a prime example site that is run buy North Carolina Students. TheWolfWeb.com hosts its own events calendar, forums, photo hosting and many other services. This would be a very good example to model any student site off.

I'm not sure how far this idea should be taken but if anyone has any thoughts or would like to help me take this plan any further than leave a comment. This could easily end up in the too much work bin, but just as easily end up as a holiday project.

Cool Idea

I think its quite a good idea. I might be able to lend assistance if your wanting to use Java, Groovy or Scala as I have a bit of experience with web programming in those languages as well as Linux, MySQL and Apache Tomcat.

Good Idea

looks like a great idea! need some kind of advertising (thru CANTA or something) Maybe get the USCA on board with it?

UCSA

I guess another name for the UCSA is bureaucrat. Not that it is a bad thing, just there are so many hoops and jumps on the way. Personally I think it would almost be easier to run it as a club. But that would be a long way off, and probably only happen once the site is getting a fair bit of traffic. The other thing that would be good about making it a club it then we could apply for funding from the UCSA. This would come in handy for hosting costs and so on.

A club?

So what ur talking about is like a club thats just a website for clubs and others to post their events on?

Say, Events Club

When I say club I'm meaning literally a UCSA club, just like, for example ENSOC. Although obviously it would be run very differently to a club, with the have to have roles then having official titles like event admin, site admin, and possibly even have users 'sign up' for the club when they register for the site.
A good name for the club would either be the same name as the site. Which would need a bit of thinking, or just something simple like the 'Web Events club'.

hmmmm

no, its definitely not your conventional club idea. What about say like a membership charge, like $1 for viewers and, I dunno, something slightly higher for groups wanting to advertise events?
although the view charge seems like something that woould scare people off.

Hosting costs

Just looked at hosting costs at egressives and it would be about $450 a year for starters. This isn't a huge cost especially if we could get advertising from say, Tui or some alcohol company. This would also allow for clubs to use the site for free encouraging them using it. Epically smaller clubs that need all the publicity they can get.

Student Website

I think that is a brilliant idea. However, with my personal lack of computing skills, I would be unable to lend assisstance.
